As Christmas & New Year is right around the corner and homes are jam-packed with presents for family and friends, we thought we’d share a few tips on helping you prevent those presents falling in the wrong hands & keeping your house secure.
Keep all gates, doors and windows locked:
That is including external building or entryways like overhead doors, fences and sheds. Most homeowners keep tools & other equipment like a ladder that may assist a prospective intruder gain access to your house.
An open exterior door or window is an invitation for intruders to easily get through your house, so keep them shut & securely locked whether you are home or not. Don’t overlook strong window locks, and upgrade them if required.
Burglars know how to identify feeble locks that’d be easily forced open. Ensure exterior doors are equipped with deadbolt locks. Sliding doors must have vertical bolts and a wooden or metal rod in the track to prevent being forced open or doors being lifted off the track. Don’t leave your property without locking the front gate, regardless of how short your trip is.
When moving to a new place change the locks:
If you are a tenant, request that your property owners change the locks if they weren’t already done. Even if a previous renter returned all the keys issued originally, there is no means to know for sure if there were ever other duplicates made & distributed. It is better to be safe than sorry, particularly when an unfamiliar person is able to walk into your locked house.
Don’t label your personal keys or hide spares outside:
If your keys are labelled & get stolen you could be in a huge problem, particularly if your wallet with your ID & address are with them. Burglars know to look beneath mats & in the gravel for fake rocks to find concealed keys, so rather leave a spare one with a reliable neighbour. If you dwell in a rural region & your neighbour is miles down the road, you better off going for a combination lockbox in a prudent area of your property.
It’s estimated that house break-ins rise by 30 per cent in the run-up to Christmas. Though the dark evenings may be a causative factor, homes full of new and costly presents are just too tempting for intruders to resist.
